Today we mourn the passing of an old friend by the name of Common Sense. Common Sense lived a long life but died from heart failure at the brink of the millennium. No one really knows how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools; hospitals, homes, factories and offices, helping folks get jobs without fanfare and foolishness.

For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, the early bird gets the worm, and life isn't always fair.

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the great Depression, and the Technical Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including feminism, body piercing, whole language and "new math."

But his health declined when he became infected with the Technological Revolution with the "if-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-… virus. in recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing federal regulation.

He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers and enlightened auditors. his health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies, reports of six-year-old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student. it declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but cannot inform the parent when the female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.

Finally Common Sense lost his will to live as the ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.

As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable regulations for asbestos, low flow toilets, "smart" guns, the nurturing of Prohibition Laws and mandatory airbags.

Finally when told that the homeowners association restricted exterior furniture only to that which enhanced property values, he breathed his last.

Common Sense was preceded by death by his parents Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, and his son, Reason.

Three stepbrothers survive him: Rights, Tolerance and Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral evidently because so few realized he was gone.

How true, how very true. RIP common sense.

Very true. I hope he left a successor, an heir that will bring back that which is needed.

How so true! and sad!

Wow…that is very true. you forgot to mention that his cousin Accountability has also died though. this should be published.

This has been doing the rounds in email form for at least ten years…but it is still as true today as it was then…

you stand for parliment and you get my vote for a start.WE NEED A COMON SENSE PARTY.

Common sense is not all that applicable to be honest. quite a lot of things contradict common sense naturally.

e.g.
if you're nicer to a person they should like you more?
work harder and you are more likely to get promoted?
you should eat things that you like?
you should be with people you like?

as you can imagine, there are many exceptions and violations of such rules of common sense. What may seem as common sense can be a means of ignorance of something larger and more profound.

Even scientists and academics contibute to what may seem to be rational (something higher than and more than common sense) is contradicted but with good reasons.

We could ask ourselves was common sense out of place in the first place instead of asking whether it disappeared or not.

Just a thought.

Very nice but you've waited too long to realize "common sense" was dead . it died at the turn of the century … the 19th century . I never got to know "common sense" and I was born in 1951 . Maybe it was around but not in government .

sorely missed but never forgotton, R.I.P common sense, (((( lets pray ))))

Very succinct, and, sadly very true!!!

Were Flowers banned at his funeral by Elf 'n' Safety, or was it just Religion of the Christian kind?

Rest in peace my old friend, as we will probably not see your like again

Pure genius. I salute you. you have encapsulated our present day woe with exacting brilliance. you should write a book and I would buy it. this observation should be in a national newspaper.

PS. I Heard he had died, but I wasn't sure. may he be reincarnated soon!

Lets start a campaign to revive it….so where do you start?

Heres hoping & (praying) his good daughter, Responsibility & his good son, Reason, revive the legacy of their Dad.

They will need a lot of encouragement & support..maybe we all could help..
: )

Well done Plato now if I had any sense I wouldn't be wishing Irkle happy Birthday. does anyone know how old Irkle is? Older then the dawn of time older then Stonehenge? If you know theres a present in it for you.

So true Plato.
So very true.

You are gonna be in trouble for calling common sense "HE".

Not politically correct you know!

I'm afraid – due to the false dvertising laws

sense can no longer be called 'common'. it is now a rare commodity and has suplanted gold as the standard unit of currency
